Response to The Designer as Producer

I found through my reading that design was not what I thought it was. Design is so much more and designers are capable of doing and exploring more mediums than my previous notions allowed me to understand. After reading The Designer as Producer I understood not only the evolution of design better but I understand how large the field of design really is.

A designer is much more then someone who comes up with the style of a product. A designer must be more dynamic in his/her way of thinking. A designer must consider: who is my audience, where will my work be displayed, what does my work convey, what will be its environment and how will it be manufactured? If a designer considers these seemingly simple questions he/she becomes more the just a designer, he/she becomes a producer of their subject.

Design

Design is a hard thing to define because it covers such a range of meanings. Design can be the way something looks, feels, and sounds. Design can also be the way a product, an art piece or a song makes you feel as a direct result of its design. There are many different types of designers and there are many mediums to design in. Design to me is a culmination of many different artistic mediums and perspectives all aiming towards one basic principal of art, to make something look aesthetically pleasing or the ladder, to make a statement.

In Intro to Design Principals I hope to learn a new way of expressing ideas and theory onto and through new mediums and new techniques. I hope the information I learn in this class I can translate into the work I do. I am eagerly anticipate exploring new ways of approaching the creation of a work, considering different aspects and view points of design principals, and learning new methodology in order to better myself as an artist.
